All-Round iPower Review on Hosting Joomla

All-Round iPower Review on Hosting Joomla

iPower is a large web hosting brand of EIG, hosting more than 1 million websites for clients from over 100 countries. Since its establishment, the company has been putting emphasis on shared web hosting. Although VPS and dedicated servers are also available now on iPower, the user base mainly consists of individuals and small businesses.

Therefore, this review focuses on iPower shared hosting services, revealing the pros and cons to help Joomla users make a decision. First of all, see what iPower offer in the shared hosting plans.

iPower Shared Hosting Plans

iPower provides altogether 3 shared hosting plans for beginners with low requirements on server resources and small businesses with a limited budget. All of the plans include:

  • PHP 4/5 and MySQL in default server configurations, with which the major versions of Joomla are supported.
  • Daily website backups for ensuring the safety of the data on iPower servers.
  • Email filtering, which helps stop spam.
  • Quick Joomla installation with Mojo Marketplace.

For the differences between the plans, read the table below. Note that the prices for Starter and Pro Plan are the promotional rates which only apply to the initial term.

Pros of iPower Shared Hosting

A large number of extras

iPower offers many extras to help their users save time and money in promoting and enhancing websites. In terms of marketing, iPower offers:

  • $100 credits for promotion with Google AdWords.
  • $100 credits for promotion with Yahoo/Bing search marketing program.
  • A free listing on YP.com.
  • A toll-free US phone number with 100 minutes (free) per month.

Good uptime

iPower does not make an uptime guarantee officially, but the company has indeed made efforts in keeping customers’ websites online. Despite regular maintenance and occasional unexpected server corruption, iPower can achieve more than 99.8% server and network uptime. Read the monitoring results in the past 30 days, not excellent but still good for shared hosting.

iPower guarantees website accessibility by equipping both data centers with 24×7 security, N+1 redundancy and redundant routers. In addition, the company backs each server up with another server, so that even if the primary one gets interrupted, the hosted websites can still be served by the backup.

Abundant upgrade options

As is discussed above, iPower offers 3 shared hosting options, which ensures some room for a website to grow. In addition, when all the plans fail to meet the demand, there are still VPS and dedicated servers available for choosing.

Cons of iPower Shared Hosting

Expensive domain names

iPower charges much higher domain registration fees than others. Even for a normal .com domain, the fee is $16.99/yr, which seems a little bit unreasonable. Most other web hosts rate a .com domain at around $12/yr, and domain registrars like GoDaddy even offer promotional price which can be lower than $10/yr.

Besides, iPower TOS includes the following line in terms of the fees for domain names.

iPower Domain Fees

High hosting renewal rates

The promotional prices of iPower Starter and Pro Plan are reasonable, starting from $3.99/mo and $3.95/mo respectively. But you should also pay attention to the renewal rates especially when you agree to auto-renewal, or you might suffer a large loss as renewal rates are usually much higher.

For Starter plan, renewal costs $5.95/mo regardless of the length of the term. And for Pro Plan, the renewal fees are $10.99/mo for 1-month and 12-month terms, $9.99/mo for 24-month terms and $8.99/mo for 36-month terms. Considering the limited features included in the plans, the regular prices are much too expensive.

No demo & limited features of the control panel

iPower does not utilize cPanel as the control panel. Instead, it uses a custom control panel named vDeck. vDeck comes with tools for building websites, managing statistics and creating email accounts, but it cannot compete with cPanel in either design or usability.

Another downside of vDeck is that there is no demo for it, even on the official website. So before you purchase a hosting package containing the control panel, you can find no way to have a try.

Many complaints about website shutdown

In the recent 2 years, we have seen many iPower users complaining that their websites or emails were shut down by their host without any notice in advance. Unbelievable, but that is the truth.

Usually, when the users stuck in this trouble contact the support team and ask why there is no notice, the reply is something like “We do not offer such a service”. How rude and irresponsible!

This is what a customer said about the sudden company email shutdown:

iPower Complaint

Slow speed for server response and page loads

Although iPower claims that they use many technologies including load balancer to offer users a fast hosting experience, they fail to meet our expectation in the testing. We have been monitoring iPower for more than 1 year, and below is what we get for the past month. Nothing more than disappointment. There is a reason for believing that iPower services are decreasing in quality.

Terrible technical support

iPower offers terrible technical support, which is the most important factor that forces many users to leave for another web host. There are several reasons why we say “terrible”.

  • iPower technical support is helpless. The support representatives have little knowledge about web hosting – even the products of iPower.
  • For downtime issues reported by users, they usually say it’s the fault of custom code or third-party applications.
  • It is hard to reach a real human being for support, and the company might charge additional fees for dealing with the problem with your site.

iPower Technical Support Sucks

Is iPower Worth a Try?

The answer is NO, of course. Except for the free credits and good uptime records, there is definitely no reason for hosting Joomla with iPower.

If you are currently looking for a server to reside Joomla on, take a look at the web hosts below which offer cPanel, excellent uptime, and technical support that really helps.
